As winter settles in, the popularity of hot beverages skyrockets. There is nothing quite like a warm mug of decadent, flavorful liquid on a cold day.
For most Indians, a morning ritual isn’t complete without a hot cup of tea or coffee. Though tea has traditionally been the preferred beverage in the subcontinent, coffee has caught up in the last few decades.
While urban coffee consumption accounts for roughly 73% of the overall volume, the remaining 27% is from rural consumption, particularly in South India.
While coffee has long been popular in India’s south (popularly called filter coffee), the beverage grew in popularity across the country in the early 2000s, owing to a cafe culture boom that reflected the country’s IT sector expansion. There has been an increase in the number of cafés in the nation that cater largely to the younger generations.
In a growing market such as this, Trelish is an emerging name. Offering authentic, premium, and diverse filter coffee selections, it has caught the Indian coffee lover’s attention.
Childhood Friends to Cofounders – The Beginnings of Trelish
Trelish started with a shared passion for coffee between two friends, Kavita and Aditi. These childhood friends became Trelish’s cofounders in 2020.
Aditi had strong expertise in food cold chain technology development, company growth, and supply chain consultancy. Kavita, with her experience in directing big teams, business strategy, and sales throughout tier I and tier II regions, made an ideal team.
Her strong result-oriented focus complemented Aditi’s passion for establishing brand value and building customer reputation.
It all started when friends got together for coffee at Kavita’s house one day. Awed as usual with her mother’s home brew coffee, they requested Kavita to take the coffee brew home since it was very hard and tedious to get a brew right on their own. This made Kavita and Aditi think.
They found that many people, including their friends, enjoyed fine-filter coffee but lacked the skills or time to make it at home. They quickly created a trial product to gauge client acceptability and test the market. The pilot went off without a hitch.
What Goes Into The Cup?
Most of India’s coffee consumers use instant coffee. While convenient, its flavor or aroma is not comparable to freshly brewed coffee. But on the flip side, grinding and brewing fresh coffee every day is an exhaustive process that requires special equipment. Also, most people do not have the right skills.
This leaves going to a cafe to satiate their premium coffee needs, but it is neither affordable nor possible for most Indians daily. This is where Trelish fills the market gap.
Trelish introduced a novel concept of ready-to-drink liquid coffee brews. Simply pour the coffee into a cup of boiling milk. The coffee is freshly brewed and guarantees to preserve the brewed coffee’s freshness and fragrance.
Their single-serve pouches also ensure that you get just the proper quantity of coffee for your cup and a consistent cup of coffee every time. Trelish’s ready-to-drink filter coffee liquid brew is created with high-quality coffee beans sourced from South Indian farms.
It’s nutritious, sugar-free, and preservative-free. The beans are sourced from Chikmagalur and Coorg.
The Present And The Future
Trelish, which launched in 2020, has expanded in leaps and bounds in terms of both presence and product variety. Trelish’s products are now found in over 3000 major retailers across nine cities in western and southern India. Their products are available on all major eCommerce sites in India.
One of the best features of Trelish is its variety of coffee flavors. Americano black coffee, Mexican cinnamon coffee, and Arabic cardamom coffee are some of the most unique offerings of Trelish.
The founders want to introduce the best foreign coffee blends to the Indian market. The usual customer does not get much variety in coffee in India, but with Trelish, Indian coffee aficionados may sample coffee from all around the globe while relaxing at home.
Trelish launched a one-of-a-kind product line of worldwide coffees in September 2021. Coffee blends from the United States, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Senegal are now available in their unique ready-to-drink liquid form. They also combined coffee flavors with their vanilla and mint mojito mixes which creates a café-at-home atmosphere.
The founders say:
“At Trelish, we love to keep innovating to bring good wholesome beverages & foods but in an easy and convenient form. We are already working on expanding in different categories beyond coffee and you can soon expect to see some never-before innovations in the Indian beverage market.”
A Heartwarming Cuppa
In India, coffee consumption is expected to double in five to six years. Consumption at home and at cafes will both grow.
According to Statista, around 1,170 thousand 60 kilogram bags of coffee were used in India in 2020. So, whether you prefer heading out with friends to get an iced latte at a cafe, or drink your morning cup of joy peacefully at home, coffee will set your scene.
As Trelish’s founders say, “We take our coffee seriously so that you don’t have to.” Emerging companies like Trelish are making sipping quality coffee easier at home.
