Ahmedabad deeptech startup SpectraGaze Systems has raised Rs 3.7 crore in a seed round led by GVFL, with angel investors participating.
The round is the company’s first external fundraise after three years of customer-funded operations. Founded in 2023 by former ISRO scientist Arup Banerjee, the startup builds optical imaging sensors and electro-optical payloads for space, defence and scientific applications.
What the money will fund
The capital will go into product development, engineering team expansion, testing infrastructure upgrades and the execution of existing customer programmes, alongside business development.
SpectraGaze is building a hyperspectral imaging camera for a 3U satellite, due for delivery to Kaynes Technology in November 2026. Its roadmap spans Earth observation, space-based surveillance, greenhouse gas mapping and drone-based imaging.
Customers and contracts
The startup counts ISRO, the Physical Research Laboratory and Kaynes Technology India among its customers. It has delivered an infrared detector and test system to ISRO and secured an image sensor development contract for the agency’s next-generation HRSAT programme.
It has also won an iDEX PRIME Challenge to build an indigenous Infrared Detector Dewar Cooler Assembly, under the Defence Ministry’s programme for defence-tech startups.
Why this round matters
India’s satellites and defence systems still depend heavily on imported imaging detectors, and sensors are among the hardest components to indigenise. SpectraGaze is attacking that bottleneck directly rather than building satellites or analytics platforms like some peers.
Bengaluru’s GalaxEye works on optical and radar imaging systems and raised $6.7 million in September 2026, while Ahmedabad’s Optimized Electrotech received an ISRO optical imaging technology transfer. A detector maker with ISRO contracts and defence innovation backing fits squarely into the government’s import-substitution push.
Our take
The round is small, but the signal is real. Customer-funded traction before raising institutional capital is exactly the discipline deeptech needs, and GVFL’s seed cheque validates three years of revenue-first building. The risk is concentration: a handful of institutional customers and one big November delivery. If the hyperspectral camera ships on time, SpectraGaze graduates from supplier to platform. If it slips, the runway is short.
